The Subtleties of Movement

The Subtleties of Movement

The vibe is effortless, brushed-out and lived-in, with just a few intentional touches. We're not aiming for big, bouncy curls here.

Here's my guide to how I styled this look: subtle, understated and focused on enhancing natural movement and beauty.

Step One: Prep and Dry the Hair

Start with towel-dried hair. Using the YS Park Titan Mesh Diffuser, dry the hair while encouraging natural movement. Focus on enhancing waves and light curls through the mid-sections. The goal is to maintain as much of the natural movement as possible.

Step Two: Part and Smooth the Top

Once the hair is dry, identify and trace the natural parting line back to the deep crown area. Use a YS Park Big Hearted Round Tooth Comb to gently groom from the part, keeping the top section smooth and controlled. Maintain only natural volume on top so it blends seamlessly with the mid-length texture.

Step Three: Enhance Natural Movement

Use the Create Curling Iron to randomly enhance movement through the mid-lengths. The smaller 20mm iron will create more defined curls. Its dual ceramic heaters produce lasting waves without compromising hair elasticity, giving a natural, lived-in finish.

Avoid uniform curls—use Marseille and S Bend techniques to mimic the irregularity of natural hair movement. Keep volume soft and organic, especially at the top and ends.

Step Four: Set Marseille Waves

Continue with the iron, create Marseille waves around the hair line from the part line down. Flatten the waves using a YS Park 112 Fine tooth Pin Tail Comb and set them using Super Single Curl Clip Pins.

Step Five: Soften the Ends

Use a large YS Park Carbon Tiger Brush to soften any overly defined ends — this is essential for a modern, effortless style. Finish the ends with a moisturising product like Goe Oil or Supremo Magic Move. Remove the curl clips and lightly separate the Marseille waves around the face for a more lived in feel.

Step Six: Final Styling Touch

Finish by brushing through with the YS Park 651 Luster Wood Styler. Its combination of bristles and nylon pins helps unify the style, gently unifying the hair while adding subtle volume and softening the overall look.
